Lelaki Melayu Tak Guna? or not.
Posted on 12 Jul 2010| Permalink
I just read this article on Berita Minggu front page, “Lelaki Melayu Tak Guna”. First of all, thank you Berita Minggu for having so much “faith” in the Malay male population in Singapore. There are so many flaws in this article based on a Thesis paper by this lady named Lulu Marlya who I happened to know, not so directly during my JC days. I cannot fathom how such a superficial thesis paper can win an award. Okay maybe I haven’t read it myself, but I don’t think this article is portraying anything positive about her thesis paper. I would like to think that her thesis paper has no basis because she is not even married. Why would I want to get myself involved in an article about relationships when it is written by somebody of my age? What makes her more of an expert than I am? These are all subjective. And also, I’m beginning to feel that the whole article is touching on SPGs (Sarong Party Girls), okay maybe not entirely about the “Party” part. Okay let me create another term to suit this article, wait for it.....Sarong Elite Girls (SEGs). Yup! Malay women who think that they are too good for Malay guys.

The article mentioned that part of the Malay male population is not as smart as the females. This is flawed because paper qualification only does not sum up to a successful life. Success is subjective, you are emotionally successful? Financially successful? Just because you females have a degree or whatever, does not mean anything really. So you have a GPA of 5.0, so? The statement above has portrayed the female population as being elitist.

I give you a scenario, the man has a diploma but wants to continue studying but can’t due to financial reasons. He meets a girl, he likes the girl and the girl likes him. Then she discovers he has only diploma and stopped seeing him. YOU TELL ME HOW THAT GUY SUPPOSE TO FEEL DAMN IT! I don’t know about you guys but that is the impression I got after reading that statement.

The next statement is, Malay guys feel that they are of a higher standard/level than Malay women. Come on, this is the 21st century. Don’t make such generalizations. The article could try base the research on Malay males too rather than just Malay women who are married or attached to foreign men. The sample size = FAILED. I would love to be proven wrong with SPECIFIC calculations and research results. =)

Thirdly, Malay men are not as open-minded and make decisions alone. I think this is a delusional statement. Nobody said women can’t veto a decision. It is not cast in stone. Not everybody who goes into a relationship becomes an expert. There are always obstacles to go through. This gives me the impression that Malay women are AFRAID of obstacles and does not want challenges in their relationship. They would rather be with these “open-minded” foreigners who would give in to them about anything. Easy way out? I don’t know, could be a possibility.

Lastly, Malay men who are highly educated tend to be taken early. So is it our fault? This reason is not even congruent with the article heading “Lelaki melayu tak guna?”. You women are so complex. Single or taken men can be problems. And you want men that you can’t have. Please make up your mind and be realistic, not everything is perfect in this world.

You think you know me? think again...

I am growing tired of people who feel that they know me very well. Yes if you have been with me half of my life I guess you might know me very well. Any lesser than that, you know nuts.

How do you feel, being thrusted into a relationship/friendship where labels are being thrown around macam pasar malam? The moment you know that person, you put labels on him/her. You stereotype that person inferring from your first impression. I know it is inevitable but I seriously think it is getting out of control. Have you guys thought about giving the person the benefit of the doubt?

I have grown to learn not to stereotype people so quickly. If I do, then why study communications right? I might as well study Bachelor in Stereotyping (B.Stereo). How does that sound to you? People may find me weird but when you think again, who is the weird one now?

Please, please, don't act like you know me very well. There's more to me than my FACEBOOK account, there's more to me than this BLOG too. If you want to know me better, ask me out for coffee or something because I prefer a face to face interaction which people are afraid to do nowadays.

In other news, PORTUGAL had an awesome match against North Korea, 7 - 0. 7 FREAKING goals in the second half with one contributed by Ronaldo which was sensational and "Youtube worthy" =)). Todo o caminho Portugal! I don't really care who wins this WorldCup, I just want to see awesome matches. Nobody freaking subscribe to WorldCup to watch DRAWS or LOUSY wins. Allez Allez!

The New Paper (TNP) today reported on how bad the rating is for American Idol this season. For me, American idol has become less and less interesting but there are still some high between seasons. For example, last season with the likes of Adam Lambert (Awesome performer!) and Kris Allen.
The top 5 bum notes TNP discussed were;

1. Lee Dewyze Vs Crystal Bowersox
Yes, both of them are similar in many ways, singer-songwriter feeling with the guitar. Not much choice there. But who am I to judge what's in season in America. hahah. Maybe they are in season or America going for overkill. They want the underdogs to win. Thats 2 underdogs in the finale.

2. Judgement Time
The judges this season were TOO specific with their critique. They wanted the contestant to change to fit THEIR liking and preference. Truth be told that you can only be yourself and maximise your strengths and what you have. The judges kept on emphasizing to be true to yourself to the point that I think TNP trying to say is that they have not made any life changing or incredible performances. This is a competition to show talent yes a bit of personality but this season just too much (Cue Crystal's crying episode). If she had oversome it, it would have made a greater impact on the show.

Anyways, I strongly feel that Paula Abdul should still be in the show as one of the judges. She made me feel confident about myself through the words she use. Maybe the contestants felt it too thats why past season had INCREDIBLE performances because they pushed themselves not for the judges but for themselves.

Also it's so obvious the judges favour Lee Dewyze.
Somehow I feel that Ellen Degeneres should not be in the show. No offence, but I think she is better off with her own show.

3. Save it for later.
The save on Michael Lynch is just totally nonsense. And Siobhan, seriously? America? Who the f**k in the competition who can actually make me get goosebumps all over (cue paint it black), its only her!

4. Ryan Reeks
Ryan seacrest needs to get his act properly. The stage has become oh-so comfortable for him, too comfortable actually, that his hosting skills just became mediocre, lack-lustre and just awkward.

5. Teflon Tim
Tim Urban, seriously? What were the producers trying to show here? He really can't sing to save himself. Other than his goodlooks, I mean what is there to him anymore? Probably, the producers had their own reasons. I am very sure that out of the top 24 contestants, they could have picked a better replacement. Yes, no?

I would like to just add on to that list; the mentors.
Shania Twain? How old is that lady? Yes her songs are damn nice, but she is from another ERA! The songs are not current. The younger audiences might not even know who she is. If her status was like Frank Sinatra, I guess almost anyone would know her.

Miley Cyrus. A younger kid mentoring the contestants who are are older than her. It is just weird. Producers, have you ever asked yourself that question? Okay she might be famous and all, but putting her in the same light as Adam Lambert and Jamie Foxx is just so so wrong. Though the music industry sees her in a different way, the audience DON'T!

I conclude, the producers have themselves to blame on the less than impressive ratings and the decrease in voting numbers.

On a side note, I was reading The Straits Times online and came across this article about Manhunt competition where the guys had to actually strip infront of an open audience and do a runway show (sort of). Okay it's not strip naked but to their undies, however I still think its weird. What is suppose to be done backstage should remain back there. I applaud on the wide choices of contestants.

If only our local soccer team had players who look like them all muscular and fit, I'm damn sure the soccer team would flourish somehow. Just look at other leagues in the world adn compare it to Singapore. We are pale in comparison. Soccer players turned models or doing modelling as a sideline. Why not Singapore? You know what I mean. I've seen better soccer matches in "A" division when I was in my JC days. What happened to all this players? They should be groomed from young and get introduced into the league. They don't just turn into a soccer pro overnight. Importing foreginers ain't gonna solve ANYTHING.

All the best to Singapore and YOG.
